A winter afternoon for Pilates teachers

Coorie In

When the days are short

Coorie in — to nestle down somewhere warm when the light goes early.

Four hours of candlelight, movement, warm food and good company. You’ve spent the year keeping everybody else warm.

The invitation

You spend the year holding the room for everybody else.

Noticing what they need, adjusting, keeping them going. By November you are the warmest thing in your own studio and nobody has thought to ask how you are.

So come and coorie in for an afternoon.

We start in the last of the daylight and finish in the dark. There is moving, and eating, and dancing, and a stretch by candlelight, and at some point I will read to you. There is nothing to prepare, nothing to achieve, and no plan for next year to make.

Cameras are optional the whole way through. Come and hide at the back if that’s what you need — you’ll still be in the room.

What happens

From the last of the light into the dark

2.00

Coming in

Breath, blankets, and shaking off the cold.

2.25

Warming through

We start with your hands. They’ve held everybody all year and nobody has done a thing for them. Then a soft ball and a lymph sequence for wherever else is asking.

3.10

The lively bit

A Pilates flow, and then a dance party — to a playlist you choose when you book.

Sunset, just before four

4.00

The gloaming

The light goes around four, so that’s when we eat. Something warm, and a proper sit down together.

4.30

By candlelight

Candles lit, lamps low, and a slow ball class in the dark.

5.15

Read to

Ten minutes of being read to, which nobody has done for you since you were small. Nothing to discuss afterwards.

5.30

The toast

We raise a glass — not to ourselves, but each to one client who changed something for us this year.

Who it’s for

Any Pilates teacher who has spent the year looking after everybody else.

You don’t need to be a member of anything, and you don’t need to have had a good year.

The timing suits Europe and the Americas — two in the afternoon in London, nine in the morning in New York, six on the west coast. If you’re in Australia or New Zealand you’ll be asleep, so book anyway and I’ll send you the recording.
